Why We Don't take X-rays for Lower Back Pain

If you come to our office as a new patient with lower back pain, you might expect that the first step is taking x-rays.  But here’s the truth — for most people, that’s not necessary.

Why not?
Because research (and our own experience) shows that in many cases, x-rays don’t help us get you feeling better any faster — and sometimes, they can lead to extra costs, harmful radiation, and unnecessary worry.

The American Chiropractic Association agrees. In their Choosing Wisely recommendations, they state:

1.  Avoid routine spinal imaging in the absence of clear clinical indicators for patients with acute low back pain of less than six (6) weeks duration.

2.  Do not perform repeat imaging to monitor patients’ progress.

At our office, we focus on what will help you heal quickly and safely.  If we do need imaging, we’ll refer you to Reno Diagnostic Center or another trusted local facility for x-rays or an MRI.

When do we order imaging right away?
If you have any of the “red flag” symptoms for low back pain, we won’t wait. These include:

  • Fever or chills

  • Recent urinary tract infection

  • Unrelenting night pain or pain at rest

  • Numbness in the “saddle” area

  • Pain, weakness, or numbness in both legs

  • Trouble urinating

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • History of cancer

  • Osteoporosis

  • Long-term steroid use

Bottom line:  we believe in giving you the right care at the right time — not just doing tests because “that’s how it’s always been done.”  Our goal is to get you back to living without pain, as quickly and safely as possible.
